FLEGT IMM Spring 2018 newsletter now online

The FLEGT Independent Market Monitoring (IMM) project has published its second quarterly newsletter.

Training on Ghana's TLAS wood tracking system by IMM

The new edition, which is available for download here, focuses on Ghana’s progress in VPA implementation, the outcome of a cargo shipment test evaluating export and import procedures in preparation for the transport of Ghanaian FLEGT-licensed timber to Europe, and recent trends in EU-Ghana tropical timber trade.

The newsletter also features reports on the first IMM Trade Consultation in London in March. It included a general report summarising all presentations, short reports on each of the afternoon workshops — trends in tropical timber trade, sustainability and marketing, and public procurement — and comments from participants.

There are also reports following up on two of the presentations. The first explains in more detail sustainable forest management and the PHPL (Sustainable Production Forest Management) system in Indonesia. In the second, David Hopkins, managing director of the UK Timber Trade Federation, explains why he supports the recognition of FLEGT licences in UK public procurement on equal footing with the Forest Stewardship Council and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification.

The Market News section discusses trends in European tropical timber imports in 2017 and looks into the development of the EU’s imports from Indonesia.

The newsletter also informs about IMM’s on-going furniture sector scoping study and summarises a report by the EU FLEGT Facility about options for China to incorporate timber legality requirements into its laws.
